Disability Rights NC Investigates Restraints, Handcuffs And "WWF
Room" At Middle School
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily

September 17, 2008
WAKE COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA--North
Carolina's protection and advocacy system is investigating claims made by
parents of students with autism, that their children have been improperly
restrained, handcuffed, and made to wrestle with other students and teaching
assistants at a Wake County school.
Disability Rights North Carolina is looking into allegations made by three separate parents that their children were mistreated in the self-contained classroom at Carroll Middle School.
Some of the children reportedly came home with bruises after being restrained.
DRNC officials told reporters that they are also looking into the parents' claims that the school was using a vacant classroom, dubbed the "WWF room", to have students wrestle each other and teachers aides -- to "let their aggression out".
Executive Director Vicki Smith told WTVD-TV, "We're always shocked to find out that people with disabilities can be victimized by the very people who are supposed to serve them."
