DOJ: Apartment's Ban On Service Dogs Violates Federal Law
By

LANCASTER,
PENNSYLVANIA--The rental manager and owners of an 85-unit apartment complex are
violating the federal Fair Housing Act by refusing to rent to people who use
service animals, the U.S. Department of Justice claimed in a suit it filed last
week.
According to a DOJ press release, investigators used "fair-housing testers", people who pretend to be renters, to gather information about possible discriminatory practices in apartment rentals.
The complaint asked U.S. District Court in Eastern Pennsylvania to order the owners of Barrcrest Manor Apartments and its rental manager, Sandy Brown, to change its "no dog" policy to allow service animals.
It also asked the court to order the defendants to compensate those who have been injured by their discriminatory practices.
