Neighbors Ordered To Get Rid Of Vicious Dog

ERIE, COLORADO--An Erie Municipal Court Judge has reversed an earlier decision of his and ordered that a couple's dog would be destroyed if they do not find at least a temporary home for it within 30 days.

Judge Fred Steele said on April 11 that Robert and Emily Arnold's Labrador/chow mix, Bear, was a vicious dog because last October it attacked and injured Racer, a guide dog belonging to next-door neighbor, Jamie Carley. Steele said at that time, however, that he would not order Bear to be euthanized.

But the judge changed his mind last week, and ordered the Arnolds to find a different home for Bear, so that Carley can get a new guide dog. He also fined the couple $250, plus another $50 in fees and court costs.

It is likely that the Arnolds will not have to find a permanent home for Bear, as Carley is trying to sell her house to move closer to public transportation.

Several states have passed laws designed to protect guide, hearing and service animals from attacks, harrasment and interference by other dogs.
