Higher Education No Longer Off Limits
January 12, 2006

FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA--Wednesday's NewsBlaze ran an article about programs at both 4- and 2-year colleges specifically designed for adult students with developmental disabilities.

At least 90 such programs across the country have been launched in recent years. These programs focus on academics, such as math and writing; independent living skills, such as menu planning and balancing a checkbook; and work skills training.

The story featured the "Learning Into Future Environments" (LIFE) program, administered since 2003 through the Helen A. Kellar Institute for Human Disabilities at George Mason University.

Aside from the skills and academic training, regular interaction between LIFE students and the rest of the university's student body "promotes a sense of inclusion in campus activities" so students benefit "socially as well as academically from their post-secondary scholastic experience."
