Theater Program Adapts To Vets

BELFAST, MAINE--A nonprofit organization that teaches acting and theater production skills to people with disabilities, while providing an outlet for artistic expression, is changing its policies and focus to accommodate U.S. soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Brother Rick Curry, S.J., the founder and artistic director of the National Theatre Workshop for the Handicapped, told the Bangor Daily News that the workshop normally does not accept students until they have experienced a disability for at least three years. By that point, the person usually has learned to accept his or her disability and is ready to deal with a new way of life, Curry said.

However, with thousands of soldiers returning from the war with physical and mental disabilities, the workshop decided to modify those rules for its upcoming season. It has also created "Wounded Warriors", a new writing and theater program to help those veterans express their feelings about their new disabilities.

NTWH will host veterans in the writers' workshops from mid-July through early August.
