Sheltered Workshop Employee Fired For Leaving Woman In
Restroom
By Dave Reynolds, Inclusion Daily Express
December 30,
2005
WAUSEON, OHIO--An employee at a county-operated sheltered workshop
was fired last week for, among other things, leaving a woman with disabilities
locked inside the facility at the end of the day.
According to the Toledo Blade, Amanda Gill, a vocational habilitation programmer at the Triangular Processing Facility, was one of three employees on duty at the time of the October 20 incident. While the other two employees received written reprimands, Gill was terminated because of three other previous incidents, Superintendent Brenda Oyer said.
The sheltered workshop is located in a building that the Fulton County Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities board shares with other county operations.
The unnamed woman was in the restroom when seven workshop employees loaded about 30 other people with disabilities onto the bus that the woman was also supposed to ride, then turned out the lights, locked the doors of the facility, and left.
Later, an employee from an unrelated county department saw the woman emerge from the restroom, then called the disability office to have a rider dispatched to take her home.
Oyer said the responsible employees had not been clear about who should have checked all areas of the workshop before closing it up.
Gill had been suspended without pay during the two-month investigation. Oyer said Gill would be paid for those two months.
