Students To Consult On Inclusion Project

BRISTOL, ENGLAND--A
project looking into how to include students with disabilities in the
decision-making process looking for answers from what may be the best source --
students with disabilities themselves.
According to a Bristol City Council press release, a group of 12 children, six of whom will come from Claremont Special School, will be selected as consultants in the project, which will run from September 2005 through April 2007.
The council, Bristol University and Claremont are heading up the project with a £69,000 ($124,000 US) Esmee Fairbairn Foundation grant.
"I'm delighted with this award as it is all too easy to ignore the views of children who have significant communication difficulties and to exclude them from decision making," said equalities and inclusion manager Ruth Pickersgill. "The award will help us develop good practice which can be replicated nationally."
This project comes after what the joint statement describes as "a successful collaboration between the university and Bristol LEA (local education authority) in developing and running courses on inclusion for teachers".
